Frich Reveals: Group Trip Etiquette

It's the season of summer travel! And while group trips with friends are so much fun, planning a big group trip can come with some stress as well. Especially, when it comes to money. So this week we're breaking down all the unspoken expectations the people around you have, when it comes to taking a group trip together.

How do you navigate AirBnb cost if different people stay for different lengths of time?

So you booked the big group AirBnb. Fun!! But now the difficult part begins - people want to have a say in picking the rooms, different people arrive on different days, and then there's that one person that cancels last minute... So how do you manage it? Unfortunately, the answers are split pretty much 50/50 between charging people a "daily rate" and just splitting the cost equally between everyone. Honestly? We're pretty 50/50 on this one as well... But here's our take on what to do if someone has to cancel last minute.

Should you be going to all the group dinners?

Trips can quickly get out of hand, when it comes to the total cost of it all. Especially, if there's a bigger range in how much people in the group are making. So - is it ok to skip a few of the group activities because they're too expensive for you? Or should you have skipped the whole trip alltogether? Here's what people said: a slight majority (55%) thinks that you should be able to pick and choose which group activities to participate in (including dinners); the rest believe that if you're going on the trip, you should be doing everything together. That's for you to choose - but, if we can suggest one thing, we'd recommend having this conversation before people commit to going on the trip.

If you can’t make it last minute, should you still cover fixed costs?

The dreaded question... You suddenly can't make the trip; are you still on the hook for the expenses?

Here's what people said: 34% said they wouldn't ask for a refund if they couldn't make the trip, and would just eat the cost. 37% would want everything to be refunded, and for the group to cover the difference. 29% said that if the group offerend them a refund, they would take it, but they wouldn't ask for themselves. Our opinion? You shouldn't ask back for the fixed cost (think, your share for the hotel or group activity that has already been booked). But everything else that's per person? You shouldn't be paying.
